Velichov lies on the Ohře River, about 11 km northeast of Karlovy Vary. The village’s first written mention dates to 1142.

The Neo-Gothic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built in 1895–1896 on the site of an earlier church and consecrated in 1897. Velichov Castle took on its austere, classicism-influenced appearance after 1856, when it was bought by the physician Professor Josef Löschner. Near the castle, by the U Lípy inn, stands a sandstone statue of St John of Nepomuk dating from 1835.
